Woman Banker working in Bank of India kills self blaming three senior colleagues

Woman banker kills self, leaves a note blaming three senior colleagues
By Gagandeep Dhillon

Aruna Joshi, 49, worked for a nationalised bank for the last 25 years; her note said that she was stressed out after being "mentally harassed over a minor mistake".

A 49-year-old woman banker committed suicide at her Goregaon residence on Wednesday. The police said that a note has been recovered from the house, saying three of her senior colleagues were harassing her "over a minor mistake".

The body of Aruna Joshi — who worked at the Bank of India's Malad branch as a clerk for the last 25 years — was found hanging from the ceiling of her fifth-storey apartment in Prabha Apartments, Sejal Park, in Goregaon (W) by her mother, who resides in an adjacent building. Joshi's husband and the couple's 18-year-old son were not in the house when her body was found.

Her family members have demanded a probe against those named in the note, saying she was "continuously harassed by her seniors at work". The Goregaon police have launched inquest proceedings under Section 174 of the Criminal Procedure Code. "We will record statements of those named in the note," Senior Inspector Sunil Wadke from Goregaon Police Station said.

According to the police, Joshi committed suicide around 3.30 pm Wednesday. "The victim used a piece of cloth to hang herself from a hook in the ceiling of her bedroom. She had also locked the room. Her mother opened the flat using a separate set of keys. Surprised that Joshi's room was locked, she called up the victim's husband, who asked a few friends living in the neighbourhood to look into the matter," Wadke said.

He added that the when the door was broken open, Joshi's body was found hanging from the ceiling. She was declared dead at Siddhartha Municipal Hospital.

In the suicide note recovered from the victim's bedroom, it is mentioned that she was ending her life solely due to workrelated stress, and that she loved her family very much.

Her husband, Kiran, said that she had been stressed out for some time "due to harassment by seniors" but the family had no clue that she was depressed to such an extent.

Vishwanath Kamath, one of Joshi's family members, said that she had been working in the bank for the last 25 years.

"She was very responsible and sincere towards her work but recently, she made a small mistake due to which her seniors held a grudge. She was only a clerk, and it is the responsibility of the officers to not burden the clerks with too much work. However, they made her life a living hell. We demand stern action against all those named," he said.
